The Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf tower, completed in 1964, once stood as a closed and opaque mid-century structure. Its revitalisation stripped the building back to its frame and rearticulated it with a refined double-skin façade, full-height glazing and three additional floors. The transformation created a building of enhanced clarity, amplified urban presence and greater spatial operability, while extending its lifecycle through contemporary environmental performance.
At street level, the reconfigured podium opens the block to the city. Public passages and glazed atriums extend the building into the public realm, making it porous and welcoming. Along Berliner Allee, a continuous glass screen mediates between traffic and interior, shielding and revealing the luminous banking hall within. Sustainability is central: the double façade reduces heat gain and energy demand, while green roofs, natural ventilation and low-impact materials support ecological resilience. Civic depth is added through art, as Beat Streuli’s translucent portraits of Düsseldorf residents dissolve the boundary between public and private, turning the façade into a cultural canvas. More than a refurbishment, the project establishes a financial marketplace where commerce, culture and community converge.
