The extension of the RRX corridor in Düsseldorf becomes a catalyst for a new kind of infrastructure, combining mobility, ecology and energy. Alongside the rail upgrade, a regional Bicycle Superhighway is proposed, connecting Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne. Elevated above sections of the tracks renewed for the RRX, the cycleway turns construction momentum into a pilot project for a future national cycling network. Its structure integrates photovoltaic panels that generate renewable energy, transforming the route into a regenerative spine for the metropolis.

The masterplan links this mobility corridor to the city’s ecological framework. With new tree and shrub planting, the cycleway forms a continuous green axis that intersects existing biotope networks between river valleys and inner-city parks. Stamp-earth noise barriers replace conventional aluminium walls, merging sculpture, landscape and technology. Locally sourced, modular and low in embodied carbon, they support biodiversity, filter pollutants and provide a textured, climate-active surface. At key points, the infrastructure engages directly with the urban fabric: above Düsseldorf Volksgarten station it creates a new roof and transparent connections by lift; at the Volksgarten embankment it houses cafés and mobility hubs beneath the deck; along open stretches it offers rest stops, charging points and rental facilities.
