The Start House is an energy self-sustained, modular pavilion conceived as a prototype for temporary sports infrastructures in the Alps. First deployed at 3,700 metres on the Matter-horn, it provides shelter for athletes and equipment under the most extreme conditions.
Despite weighing only 600 kg, the structure withstands wind speeds of up to 200 km/h and can be assembled in just 90 minutes. Engineered from high-tech, recycled and recyclable materials, its igloo-inspired form is clad in a radiant silver skin that reflects the surrounding glaciers, harmonising with the alpine landscape while leaving the lightest possible trace.
Sustainability defines the concept. Fourty detachable solar panels supply up to 11 kWp of electricity, powering monitors, starting equipment and lighting with complete indepen-dence from external infrastructure. This renewable system dramatically reduces the ope-rational carbon footprint, proving that advanced technology can align with both ecological responsibility and sporting precision. The pavilion’s modular design allows it to be dismantled, transported and reassembled with minimal environmental impact. Part of the „snowstainability“ program, the Start House is a pioneering model for the future of alpine architecture – light-weight, resilient and entirely sustained by renewable energy.
