Transforming industrial relics into contemporary architecture is a formidable challenge, demanding both precision and vision. The innovative repurposing of the Concrete Silo at Düsseldorf’s Plange Mühle exemplifies technical ingenuity at its finest – elevating the site from zero use to full capacity, integrating modern workspaces within its historic framework.
Once a utilitarian storage of grain, the curved shell transforms into an intimate and welcoming place, accommodating two clinics and various healthcare facilities. The arrayed compartments provide harmonious and functional working spaces as well as ambient and serene ward retreats.
The project‘s structural complexity is staggering: ten 25-meter-high concrete tubes – cylindrical, monumental – demanding a thoughtfully calibrated intervention. The phased approach ensured stability while simultaneously unlocking flexible spatial configurations.
Heritage preservation shaped every decision. The exterior’s raw industrial presence remains, punctuated by carefully placed openings that introduce daylight while preserving the silo’s rhythm. Structurally precise yet poetically restrained, this transformation revives both an artifact and its urban context.
