The new Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Station transforms what was once a subterranean stop into a bright, spacious and distinctly civic place. Conceived as an architectural counterpart to the new Stuttgart underground station, the materiality, geometry and colour palette of both structures are precisely aligned, creating a visual and spatial unity within the city’s rail network. The new stop was raised by three metres to allow safe passage above the mainline tunnel of the S21 Project, an engineering manoeuvre that required complex coordination within one of Stuttgart’s busiest urban corridors. Built in open construction beneath constrained inner-city streets, the three-track tunnel now unfolds under a vaulted ceiling shell, filling the former underground space with daylight and air.
What emerges is a transport hub that is both technically sophisticated and remarkably humane. The once-enclosed platforms are now light-filled and transparent, improving comfort and orientation for passengers. For the first time, the design enables a direct pedestrian connection between the city’s central railway station and the longitudinal tram lines - a major advantage for commuters. Developed through a fully coordinated 3D design process shared by all planning disciplines and contractors, the station demonstrates how technical complexity can be transformed into architecture that is both precise and welcoming.
