The new Google Campus in Mountain View expands the headquarters at Charleston Park into a model for sustainable and health-promoting workplace design. Conceived as a car-free environment, the masterplan is organised around a central “Google Boulevard” reserved for bicycles and light rail, lined with shops and public amenities. The campus landscape is continuous, open and publicly accessible, transforming the site into a vibrant district rather than an isolated complex.
The building offers space for up to 3,000 people in a flexible office landscape with clear circulation and visual connections. A low-rise structure facilitates communication, while interior vertical links strengthen interaction across teams. Raised above ground, the building allows the landscape to flow underneath and creates an “active roof” where working and social life extend outdoors. Californian climate and native vegetation define the design, with orchards reinterpreted through a fruit alley that requires no irrigation. Sustainability strategies address every scale: water cycles are closed through reuse, materials are conserved and recycled, energy is generated on site and the overall system is designed to exceed LEED Platinum standards. Inspired by Californian modernism, the project seeks simplicity and harmony with nature, combining architecture, landscape and infrastructure into a healthy, resilient and forward-looking campus.
