The proposal for Düsseldorf’s “Opera of the Future” aspires an inclusive and stimulating space for cultural immersion. The place for all delivers uplifting experience to the city’s residents and visitors alike. The arc shaped geometry is carefully integrated within the heritage protected Hofgarten and accentuates the entrance to the historical city centre in a simple and natural gesture. The adjacent Grabbeplatz thematically extends to the water edge of the park. An additional pedestrian crossing at the square‘s periphery enhances the connectivity along the Heinrich-Heine-Allee and revives currently obstructed visual references.
Ramps spiral up the volume and link the public realm to all cultural and civic functions of the foyer: merging in- and outside. Their ribbons interlace with the city and prolong the axis of both striking plot framing boulevards. A central platform at the lower intersection, reminiscent of an opera balcony, offers breathtaking views during spectacle breaks. Further, independently accessible interlocks in the continuous flow are a valuable addition to the cityscape, the rooftop belvedere as a captivating highlight. Cafes, co-working spaces and multi-use areas enhance the seamless transition between the opera building and the city.
