The mathematics building at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has been comprehensively modernised to meet the dual goals of sustainability and contemporary academic life. A new energy concept has halved overall consumption, while precise architectural interventions have enhanced clarity and usability. At the heart of the five-storey structure, a central courtyard is now sheltered by a lightweight steel canopy with a membrane roof. This addition acts as a thermal buffer and gathering space, improving comfort while lending the building a distinctive identity. A new façade with high-performance insulation and generous glazing reinforces energy efficiency, maximises natural light and redefines the building’s presence with a refined, modern expression.
Inside, the programme has been reorganised to foster interaction and exchange. The ground floor accommodates seminar rooms, group study areas, a library, and a cafeteria, with offices and meeting spaces for the institute distributed across the upper levels. Additional seminar rooms and computer labs are located in the basement, ensuring efficient use of space. Throughout the refurbishment, sustainable materials were prioritised, harmful substances removed, and passive climate strategies deployed to support long-term performance. The result is a resilient and forward-looking academic building.
