The extension of the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg unites refined architecture with environmental ambition. Conceived as a “horizontal skyscraper,” or groundscraper, the sweeping structure follows the contours of the Kirchberg plateau, its curved glass façade creating a fluid transition between building and landscape. Rather than reaching upward, the design stretches across the site with a clarity that anchors it firmly in place, defining a distinctive edge to the plateau while integrating seamlessly with its topography.
Inside, the building champions flexibility and ecological intelligence. A non-hierarchical layout supports open, collaborative work, while exposed concrete ceilings store thermal mass and natural timber surfaces reinforce the project’s sustainable ethos. Temperature-controlled atriums serve as both climate regulators and social retreats, enhancing comfort and spatial quality. Generous glazing maximises daylight, supports natural ventilation, and dramatically reduces energy demand. As the first building in Europe to achieve a BREEAM “Excellent” rating, the EIB extension established a benchmark for sustainable workplace architecture – an environmentally responsive groundscraper that redefined how large-scale institutions can merge with landscape while setting ambitious performance standards.
