At the edge of Brno’s expanding city core, the new main station emerges as a net-positive, green-energy mobility hub—a civic landmark that powers itself and its surroundings. Floating above the tracks, a vast solar-active roof captures light and transforms it into energy, producing more electricity than the station requires. Its aerodynamic form responds to Brno’s wind climate: low to the northwest for protection, open to the northeast for light and air.
The lightweight grid roof, built from low-carbon recycled steel or hybrid steel–timber, spans in prefabricated modules for efficient assembly and minimal waste. Beneath it, natural ventilation and daylight shape an open concourse for seamless movement between tram, bus, metro and rail.
Terraced buildings step down towards the station, their photovoltaic roofs and garden atria buffering sound and enhancing biodiversity. Boreholes near the Svratka River provide geothermal cooling, while rainwater—up to 90,000 litres each season—is stored and reused for irrigation and greywater. Retention basins along the river manage floods and extend the public landscape. A station that breathes, generates and endures—linking Petrov’s spire with the Svratka River and redefining Brno’s future of movement and energy.
