The design for the new Bologna Centrale Station establishes a powerful architectural image that redefines the city’s identity. Conceived as a civic landmark, the expressive entrance is visible from both the urban fabric and the platform concourse, welcoming travellers with clarity and light. Two defining elements shape its character: the distinctive striped roof and the pervasive presence of daylight. Natural light becomes a unifying material, guiding orientation and animating the spatial sequence throughout the day. Its calibrated control ensures a timeless atmosphere, connecting the new complex to the changing moods of the surrounding city and landscape.

Functionally, the station orchestrates a seamless interchange between regional and high-speed rail, underground lines and people movers. The layout choreographs movement for diverse user groups - from long-distance travellers with luggage to daily commuters, business passengers and pedestrians who cross the station as part of their urban route. Generous concourses, clear sightlines and direct links between north and south make the station an integral part of Bologna’s urban continuum. Retail and public amenities activate the concourse, turning transit into encounter and everyday use into civic experience. Balancing technical precision with emotional resonance, the design transforms a transport hub into an architectural and social landmark for the city.
