The Smart Battery Park redefines the contemporary airport parking structure as an energy-producing and environmentally active piece of infrastructure. Located directly adjacent to Terminal 3, the premium parking facility combines highly efficient mobility services—including oversized parking spaces, secure parking, valet services, extensive EV charging infrastructure and intuitive circulation—with an architectural envelope that transforms a purely technical building into a recognisable landmark within the airport campus.

The façade concept responds directly to the functional and environmental conditions of the building. Rather than applying a uniform skin, it organises the large volume into a clearly articulated sequence of horizontal layers, each expressing a specific environmental function.

The lower levels are entirely enveloped by ground-based climbing vegetation, creating a living green plinth that improves the microclimate, enhances biodiversity and softens the building's relationship to its surroundings. The uppermost levels accommodate high-performance photovoltaic modules positioned where solar exposure is greatest and shading from neighbouring buildings is minimal, maximising renewable energy generation. Between these zones, a continuous band of three-dimensional expanded aluminium mesh mediates between vegetation and photovoltaics, maintaining the same architectural rhythm while providing transparency and natural ventilation.

Additional green bands subdivide the photovoltaic levels and reinforce the building's horizontal composition, while planted elements frame the entrances and strengthen orientation within the large-scale structure.

The façade is therefore not conceived as a decorative wrapper but as a performance-driven system in which every element fulfils multiple architectural, environmental and technical functions. Photovoltaic modules generate renewable energy for the building and its charging infrastructure; the green façades mitigate the urban heat island effect, improve air quality and establish habitats for flora and fauna; recycled aluminium components reduce embodied carbon while supporting circular material use. The roof structure is designed to accommodate a future vertiport should new forms of urban air mobility become operational. Until then, the reserved roof area is fully utilised for photovoltaic generation, ensuring that every available surface contributes to the building's environmental performance from day one. Together, these strategies transform a conventional parking structure into an energy-active building that demonstrates how mobility infrastructure can actively contribute to both the ecological performance and the architectural identity of the airport.

Smart Battery Park demonstrates how infrastructure can evolve beyond its conventional role. By combining renewable energy generation, biodiversity, climate-responsive design and future-ready mobility within a coherent architectural concept, the project transforms a parking structure into an active contributor to the environmental performance and long-term resilience of the airport.
